Good Morning America “Home” Contestant Winning More for the Hungry in Texas
Plano, TX – Cheryl “Action” Jackson’s winning of Good Morning America (GMA) ‘Home’ to Your Hometown Contest has opened up more opportunities for Minnie’s Food Pantry to feed the hungry in her hometown of Plano, Texas.
DreamWorks is donating 25,000 meals to the food panty and Uber, as part of their national partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, is offering discount rides to the movie’s premiere and will give back $5 per ride to Minnie’s Food Pantry during a promotional period lasting several months in the Dallas area.
Cheryl’s moving video entry beat out thousands of GMA contestant hopefuls. The animated movie premiere will bring some of it’s vocal stars, Rihanna and Jim Parsons, to Plano along with a red carpet for the team of Minnie’s Food Pantry to be treated the way they treat those coming for a meal at and take home staples from Minnie’s.
As a child Cheryl watched her parents distribute food to the working poor. Cheryl’s personal story of financial woes and hardships as an adult increased her empathy for the hungry. Watching others suffer during the economic turndown in April 2008, Cheryl decided she would continue the family legacy. Within a few months she serviced 52 families with food from her own pantry. Once word began to spread about how Minnie’s Food Pantry helped and treated people with dignity (red carpet and white table clothes), the grass roots style of the organization blossomed into one of the leading food pantries in Collin County. To date, Minnie’s Food Pantry has helped feed over 165,000 people and distributed over 3.9 million meals.
“If you can’t feed 100 people, then Feed just ONE”, is the slogan of Minnie’s Food Pantry. “I know what it feels like to be hungry and not know how you’re going to feed your children. I know the feeling of shame you receive by having to go to the government and lose your pride and integrity because you are not able to keep food on the table. It is our mission to provide healthy meals to families without the shame. Together we can reduce hunger and change lives,” says Cheryl. “One out of 6 children go to bed hungry in America.”
