Washington, DC – The Delta Research and Educational Foundation (The Delta Foundation) has awarded its 2013 Stephanie Tubbs Jones Summer Internship to Khanay Turner, a junior at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. Turner, the second recipient of the coveted STJ Internship was selected following a highly competitive selection process. Majoring in political science, Turner joins other students from across the country selected to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) internship program. Dr. Alison Harmon, president of The Delta Foundation said in announcing the 2013 internship award to Khanay Turner, “Perpetuating the rich legacy left to us by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is more than an honor. It is our obligation. We believe that her exemplary life and commitment to public service stands as a beacon of light that must be passed along to other young women.” Turner’s intensive, nine-week experience in the nation’s capital offers the opportunity to learn about the legislative process, public policy, and leadership careers in policy making.
Ms. Turner has been assigned to intern in the office of Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, (D-OH), where she will gain hands-on Capitol Hill experience. A resident of Joshua, TX, Turner was selected from a pool of impressive national applicants. Active in her collegiate community, upon graduation in 2015, Khanay’s future plans include a continuation of her expressed interest and involvement in civic and political engagement.
The Washington, DC-based Delta Foundation established the internship program to honor the trailblazing achievements of the now-deceased U.S. Congresswoman and is offered to minority women seeking careers in public service or in the public policy arena. Since 2012, the Foundation and the CBCF have collaborated to provide the STJ intern with a first-hand view of the nation’s legislative process. The late Congresswoman represented Ohio’s 11th Congressional District from 1999 until her passing in 2008.
The STJ/CBCF internship was established in 2012 with major contributions from The Clinton Family Foundation and the Hagans Family and other supporters. The program represents the latest addition to the educational programs of The Delta Foundation’s Center for Research on African American Women (the Center) which houses the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Institute for Social Justice.
The Delta Research and Educational Foundation was established in 1967 by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a public charity supporting scholastic achievement, public service programs, and research initiatives focused on African American women and their families.
