New Stephanie Tubbs Jones Internship Program Announced by the Delta Foundation

Washington, DC – The Delta Research and Educational Foundation (The Delta Foundation), announced today that applications for the 2012 Stephanie Tubbs Jones Summer Internship are being accepted. The new program represents an innovative collaboration between the Delta Foundation and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) designed to increase the number of minority women in public service.

“The Delta Foundation takes this opportunity to honor the extraordinary accomplishments left to us by our Delta member, the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. We believe that the new Internship program offers young minority women the opportunity to walk in her footsteps and better understand the complexities public officials face every day working to preserve and protect democratic principles,” said Dr. Alison J. Harmon, President of The Delta Foundation.

Two major founding gifts totaling $125,000 officially launched the new Stephanie Tubbs Jones Social Justice Institute which houses the Internship program within The Delta Foundation. The Clinton Family Foundation, established by former President William Jefferson Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presented a $100,000 gift in tribute to Congresswoman Tubbs Jones, their long-time friend. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member and Washington, DC businesswoman, Michele V. Hagans gifted $25,000 to help the new program meet its 2012 objectives.

The student awarded the 2012 Summer Internship receives a $3,000 stipend, room and board at a local Washington, DC-area university, participation in the intensive nine-week CBCF Congressional Internship Program with other students from across the country to learn about the legislative process, leadership, and public policy. The students also work in CBC member offices and attend professional development events. The Stephanie Tubbs Jones Intern is additionally expected to attend select programs and events sponsored by The Delta Foundation.

We are determined to ensure that her sense of integrity, her belief in our democracy, and the value of public service are passed along to generations of African American women,” Director of Operations for The Delta Foundation, Brittany Grimes Zaehringer, Esq., MSSA remarked.

Instructions for submitting applications are available on The Delta Foundation’s website: www.deltafoundation.net. The deadline for receipt of all completed applications is 3:00 PM, April 5, 2012.
