National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial and Urban League of Greater Atlanta held a press conference this morning and addressed the housing and economic crisis in Atlanta and the across the nation. The press conference was the kick-off for the Urban League Empowerment Summit taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Georgia World Congress Center as part of For Sisters Only Expo.
Sandra Bethea (at the podium above) and Rev. Larry McCollough were on hand to communicate their personal success stories. Ms. Sandra Bethea was unemployed for over four years and was having difficulties getting hits on her resume and landing interviews. She saw National Urban League President Marc H. Morial on television so she turned to the Urban League as a last resort. She not only received tools that helped her perfect her resume and interview skills, she said the staff at the Urban League provided much-needed motivation. After four years without a job she was feeling like the situation was hopeless. Ms. Bathea got a call for an interview and asheed at the Greater Atlanta Urban League held her hand all the way through the interview and follow-up. She was proud to report that she is now a grant analyst/evaluator for MARTA.
Ms Bathea said, “I am convinced that because of the support I received from the Urban League I gave myself the competitive edge.”
Rev. Larry McCollough spoke about his challenges with keeping his home after being cut to part time employment. The Urban League Home Rescue team was able to help Rev. McCollough obtain a mortgage modification.
