Baltimore, MD — Marilyn Mosby, the former Baltimore City State’s Attorney known for charging six police officers in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, has been sentenced for financial crimes committed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mosby, whose actions in the Gray case led to significant uprisings throughout Baltimore, was sentenced to 12 months of home confinement, 100 hours of community service, and three years of supervised release. The charges against her include making false statements about her finances to facilitate early withdrawals from her retirement funds and claiming $5,000 as a gift from her then-husband during the closing of a Florida condominium.

Mosby, who once held a prominent position in the city’s justice system, misrepresented her financial situation in order to access funds under the CARES Act, legislation designed to provide financial relief during the pandemic. She claimed that she experienced adverse financial consequences due to the pandemic, which allowed her to withdraw funds without the usual penalties.

Many of Mosby’s supporters believe she was targeted for her role in prosecuting the officers involved in Freddie Gray’s death. Gray’s death in police custody sparked widespread protests and civil unrest in Baltimore, bringing national attention to issues of police brutality and racial injustice. Mosby’s swift and decisive action in that case made her a prominent and polarizing figure.

In a statement following the sentencing, Mosby expressed remorse for her actions, stating, “I take full responsibility for my mistakes. I apologize to my family, my supporters, and the people of Baltimore who placed their trust in me. I will use this time to reflect and contribute positively to my community.”
