Award-winning singer, actress, and playwright, Mzuri Moyo Aimbaye will return to Atlanta for a performance of her acclaimed stage play about civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, during the 58th Annual Session of The Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC). The Fannie Lou Hamer Story: Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired will take place Wednesday Aug. 7, 2019, 9:15 P.M. in the Centennial Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta downtown.

“I am truly honored that Progressive National Baptist Convention president, Dr. Timothy Stewart and their members invited me to participate in this formidable convention,” said Aimbaye. “The PNBC was formed to fight for freedom and they have continued the struggle for full voter registration, education and participation in society. That’s the goal of this play which lifts up the triumphs of a civil and voting rights warrior,”

“Its also significant that the play starts directly after the Freedom Banquet featuring a keynote address by another voting rights warrior, Stacey Abrams,” adds Aimbaye whose powerful soprano voice has taken her from her hometown of Paterson, NJ, to New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center and venues throughout Europe.

The audience is in for a treat as Aimbaye couples her exceptional storytelling abilities with her mellifluous voice and commanding stage presence to take the audience on an incredible journey as Fannie Lou Hamer returns from heaven on a mission to invoke a sense of purpose and responsibility. Through intimate conversations and twelve emotionally moving songs, Aimbaye transforms into Fannie Lou Hamer and gives a witty and personal account of her life growing up as the youngest of 20 siblings on a Mississippi sharecropping plantation and the struggles she encountered fighting for the right to vote.

Awarded “Best Actress,” “Best Producer,” and “Best Play” at the 2015 Atlanta Black Theater Festival, “The Fannie Lou Hamer Story” is part of a national voter empowerment initiative coupling the musical extravaganza with town hall meetings for an innovative “edutainment experience” aimed at registering, educating and mobilizing voters.

Directed by Byron C. Saunders, The Aug 7 performance of “The Fannie Lou Hamer Story” is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.thefannielouhamerstory.com, email mstee@thefannielouhamerstory.com, or call (347) 395-0259.
