Civil Rights Icon, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Will Be Honored During DNC Watch Party Celebrating the Black Vote
Philadelphia, PA – Organized labor, elected officials and Black leaders from across the country will come together to lift up champions of the Black vote and pay homage to a true icon in the civil rights movement, Rev. Dr. Joseph E Lowery, during DogonVillage.com’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) Watch Party July 26, 2016 in Philadelphia. Hosted by actress, Vivica A. Fox, and Chair of the Darby Township Democratic Party, Richard Womack Jr., the “Celebration of the Black Vote,” will feature dinner, dancing and a performance by Grammy-winning singer, Howard Hewett.
“Dr. Lowery led the Selma to Montgomery March that inspired passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a major triumph of the civil rights movement which secured the right vote for Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and Native Americans,” says Felicia Davis, co-founder of DogonVillage.com.
Davis continues, “From his work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to delivering the benediction for President Barack Obama, Dr. Lowery’s leadership and sacrifice has helped to change the face of America. A true visionary, almost 20 years ago he had DogonVillage.com build and host the SCLC website. We honor him by making sure millennials understand why – as Dr. Lowery says – voting is not just a sacred right, it’s a moral obligation.”
Influential thought leaders confirmed to attend include: Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-FL); Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman “G. K.” Butterfield (D-NC); Assistant Democratic Leader, Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-SC); woman’s rights leader, Melanie L. Campbell; civil rights leader, Barbara Arnwine, Esq; president of Women Flying High, Rita Jackson Samuels; and civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Ryan N. Boyer, business manager for Laborers’ District Council of Philadelphia & Vicinity, the Presenting Sponsor of the watch party said, “It’s an honor to celebrate those who fought for our right to vote, the hard-working individuals getting people to the polls, and most importantly, voters.” Boyer continues, “Recognizing our past contributions is a great way to get fired up to go out and mobilize voters. This election will determine America’s direction on critical issues like livable wages and safeguarding the power of labor unions to protect workers. Working together we can make history again.”
