New York, NY — Award-winning writer, activist, and public speaker Kevin Powell is teaming with Utne Reader, the envelope-pushing progressive magazine and online space, around a series of blogs on race, gender, politics, and pop culture in America. The partnership comes on the heels of Powell’s critically acclaimed new autobiography, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood (Atria Books/Simon & Schuster). It also marks the return of Utne Reader to newsstands and Barnes and Noble stores nationwide.

The first effort is a special edition on race, with Powell writing the timely and explosive cover story “Will Racism Ever End, Will I Ever Stop Being A ______?” The 7000-word essay follows the provocative path of legendary American writers like Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, James Baldwin, and bell hooks. It also features an image of Kevin Powell on the front of the magazine (please see the attached Utne Reader high-res jpeg cover).

Says Powell: “I have long been a fan of Utne Reader, since its inception over 30 years ago. Given the very tumultuous times in which we live in the United States, I am very excited to write for this publication, to bring some difficult but necessary conversations to the public, both online and offline, around the big issues of our day. I am humbly thankful to Utne Reader for this opportunity.”

“Will Racism Ever End, Will I Ever Stop Being A ______?” goes live online at www.utne.com on Monday, March 21st, and hits newsstands Tuesday, March 22nd.
