Atlanta neighborhood celebrates Lowery’s birthday
ATLANTA (AP) Oct. 9 – Friends and volunteers are gathering in Atlanta for a neighborhood clean up to help celebrate the Rev. Joseph Lowery’s birthday.
The civil rights icon turned 89 on Wednesday. To honor him, the Georgia Coalition for the Peoples Agenda is bringing people together Saturday to clean Joseph E. Lowery Blvd.
Birthday activities also include a Green Market Fair with vendors, eco-friendly face painting, a light bulb swap for energy efficient bulbs, a farmer’s market, and musical performances.
The Clean, Green & Honor Project is an initiative to do a block-by-block cleanup of Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. over the next two years.
Lowery co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
